Disability Determination Services
When you apply for Social Security, your file is reviewed by the Disability Determination Services, or DDS. In order to make a decision, DDS may request medical records or other evidence from your doctor. They may also have you complete evaluations or medical forms regarding your specific disability. If they do not have enough evidence to make a determination, they may schedule a Consultative Exam. They will then make a decision and send you a Notice of Decision.
If your claim has been denied by DDS, remember that a great majority of claims are denied at this level. We strongly recommend that you appeal that decision immediately. If DDS denies your Request for Reconsideration, it is even more important to appeal that decision. We have found that the hearing level is the most successful level for the claimant, and the level at which it is most beneficial to consult with a representative.
