Medical Expert (ME)

Medical Experts are qualified medical doctors who testify at disability hearings. Their job is to give an expert opinion of your disability. In order to be approved, you must show that your disability has lasted (or will last) at least 12 months and that you cannot work enough to earn sufficient income (SGA). Your medical records and other documents are used as evidence. If there are complex or unique factors involved in your claim, the Medical Expert is called upon to clarify.

If you are concerned about the possibility of having a Medical Expert at your hearing or want to prepare for the possibility, discuss it with your disability representative.
